Reputation has a habit of excluding first time contributors and can be gamed (eg. Someone creates a bunch of bogus repos and gets their PRs accepted).
We saw this in stackoverflow - I would see a reply that was clearly wrong, in my field of expertise, and be prevented from replying with correct info by the reputation system. Meanwhile the quality of posts was, frankly, dire as it didn't stop people who had the motivation to farm that reputation.
