🆕 blog! “Reputation Scores for GitHub Accounts”

The folks at GitHub know that Open Source maintainers are drowning in a sea of low-effort contributions. Even before Microsoft forced the unwanted Copilot assistant on millions of repos, it was always a gamble whether a new contributor would be helpful or just some witless jerk. Reputation has a habit of excluding first time contributors and can be gamed (eg. Someone creates a bunch of bogus repos and gets their PRs accepted).

We saw this in stackoverflow - I would see a reply that was clearly wrong, in my field of expertise, and be prevented from replying with correct info by the reputation system. Meanwhile the quality of posts was, frankly, dire as it didn't stop people who had the motivation to farm that reputation.

@Edent My principle worry here would be people further centralising all their work on GitHub for the express purpose of gaining reputation.

Another fear would be turning away good devs who aren’t frequent FOSS contributors.
