Now that #Conversations_im is interfacing with Google Play Services via open-source code to retrieve a push token, we could potentially add Firebase Cloud Messaging as a last-resort fallback to the F-Droid build flavor as well.

I’m not sure if people want that. To some, the F-Droid version is a guarantee that Play Services won’t be used, even when installed on the device.

@daniel for me F-Droid on one hand is the guarantee, it's google-free, on the other hand it's the only way to use Android-aps like Conversations on e.g. SailfishOS.

No, for me including play services in F-Droid-Apps is a huge and severe anti-feature.

@daniel As an Fdroid version user, I would really appreciate to have this option (maybe as opt-out). It could really help notification reliability on devices where the background networking for normal apps is not 100% reliable. Users that absolutely do not want to use this fallback could disable the option.

@daniel as a single data point: I use Conversation on Goggle-less Graphene OS, installed through Neo Store, and notifications work flawlessly. My 2 cents is that people using a similar setup will not want to have anything to do with FCM. Maybe it might be OK as long as it's strictly opt-in?

@daniel
Ageed - as an f-droid user I don't want google anything. If I wanted the build flavor with google stuff I'd install it with obtainium.

@daniel I personally get my apps from F-Droid / Accrescent with no Play Services. I'd much prefer my apps to have nothing to do with Google whatsoever.

@daniel I never recognized that Google Push really helped Conversations to wake up if Android terminated it.

My personal use of @fdroidorg is explicitly to have no stake whatsoever with Google on my Android devices.
