Only 7 gasoline cars were sold in Norway last month. Seven! 98 diesel cars & 29 hybrids were also sold, but the rest were EVs. And this comes after Norway cut EV incentives. https://electrek.co/2026/02/03/even-after-cutting-ev-incentives-norway-only-sold-98-diesel-cars-in-january/

RE: https://mastodon.social/@kottke/116013120934445460

CONTEXT

the Government Pension Fund of Norway is the largest sovereign-wealth fund in the planet; investing over a real, EU trillion in businesses worldwide.

where did they get the money to start the fund? FROM SURPLUS PETROLEUM & FOSSIL FUEL REVENUES. Norway nationalized key sectors of their economy, starting with oil & gas.

so the Norwegian government uses oil & gas money to rid the country of #petromafia #consumerism thru investments not taxes.

take that, neoliberal capitalists.

EV are not “green” in the way that has been publicized.

The problem is resource & energy use, not whether it’s internal combustion or electric.

We have to understand that shifting to a different kind of supply chain is a version of using less of something in one area, causing a rapid expansion of something equally destructive in another area

@GhostOnTheHalfShell EVs are more efficient and less polluting (in use) than many gas cars once you account for manufacture, but, yeah, humans are bad at not wanting to do even more all the time. (Not to mention wanting new EVs every few years which defeats the purpose of efficiency and offsetting pollution. Also, you crash them and suddenly nobody knows what to do with the battery cells glued into the pack? (Re-use is a thing, recycling is kind of a thing, but good grief, why do we design for landfills‽))

Yay, solar panels. What’s that? You want to use even more energy for manufacturing reality? But, wait. EVs and solar were supposed to fix our problem, but now you need more energy and water‽

Sorry, this turned into a rant of frustration at capitalism and wealth seeking.

“… the moment an electric car is manufactured up to 17.5 tons of carbon dioxide is emitted by the making of the average electric car battery,” Jordan Almond wrote for MotorBiscuit. “That measurement is even larger with the production of some of the larger batteries. To put that into perspective, a conventional internal combustion engine can produce around 45 metric tons of CO2 in a lifecycle of 160,000 miles.” 99th Day

> up to 17.5 tons of carbon dioxide is emitted by the making of the average electric car battery

17.5 is the maximum ("up to"), *not* the average;

https://climate.mit.edu/ask-mit/how-much-co2-emitted-manufacturing-batteries

Much of that is emitted by the mining and refining of the minerals used. If EoL batteries are recycled using renewable energy, that could drop to 0. See;

MIT Climate Portal

How much CO2 is emitted by manufacturing batteries?

It depends exactly where and how the battery is made—but when it comes to clean technologies like electric cars and solar power, even the dirtiest batteries emit less CO2 than using no battery at all.
