Legacy PFAS in North Atlantic pilot whales have fallen 60% over the past decade, reflecting earlier phaseouts of the most toxic “forever chemicals.”

But researchers warn of “regrettable substitution,” as similar replacements may cause comparable harm. Meanwhile, human samples show organofluorine levels holding steady or rising — suggesting newer PFAS could be accumulating mainly on land.
