I actually purchased a subscription to a streaming platform today...

I've canceled all of my streaming and use the following apps to watch series/movies:
- Kanopy (free, no ads, uses library card)
- Hoopla (free, no ads, uses library card)
- Locally hosted Jellyfin (runs off my laptop connected to wifi - I need to move it to an RPi...) loaded with shows downloaded from Internet Archive (no piracy here, I swear)

(note: I'm considering buying bluerays and ripping them to load into Jellyfin - that might be interesting)

-------------

I realized I was still watching Youtube. And their ads / algorithm is killing me. A friend had purchased Youtube Premium and I was not impressed.

I further realized all of my favorite content creators have channels on Nebula. No ads, no meaningful algorithm. Just subscribe to the channels you like and watch them there. $6 a month. And the money goes to the creators. The streaming service is creator-owned.

So I get my youtube fix... without youtube.

@tinker I've been meaning to check out Jellyfin. Is there any good setup documentation that actually describes configuration & requirements before you start, for a more technical audience? Stuff like what access controls it has, what to do about certificates, what assumptions it makes about ownership of media storage (can you use intermittently attached removable media? do library additions need to be thru it or can you add/remove files however you like? is access to watch separate from access to modify library?), etc. The project site & docs just drop you in to "go install it somewhere and see"...

@dalias -- Here is the documentation which should have answers: https://jellyfin.org/docs/

There is the Administration section: https://jellyfin.org/docs/general/administration/configuration

Managing Users: https://jellyfin.org/docs/general/server/users/adding-managing-users

Etc.

Managing Users | Jellyfin

User management can be done under Users in the Dashboard. Here you can see your current users or add new ones. And manage your users' settings.

Configuration | Jellyfin

There are several entry points available for administrators to manage the configuration of their server. This section aims to outline all those configuration methods, explain what options are available, and what each option does.

Introduction | Jellyfin

Jellyfin is a Free Software Media System that puts you in control of managing and streaming your media. It is an alternative to the proprietary Emby and Plex, to provide media from a dedicated server to end-user devices via multiple apps. Jellyfin is descended from Emby's 3.5.2 release and ported to the .NET Core framework to enable full cross-platform support. There are no strings attached, no premium licenses or features, and no hidden agendas: just a team who want to build something better and work together to achieve it. We welcome anyone who is interested in joining us in our quest!

@tinker Not quite as much as I was looking for, but some of it's in the Post-Install Setup section I'd missed. And... I just realized Alpine has jellyfin packaged! OK, this looks like it'll be easy for me to do a test setup, and later a dedicated device once I get the hang of it. Thanks for prompting me to check this out.

@tinker welcome to nebula. Been a subscriber for 2 years.

For YouTube, I use unlock origin to be ad free and subscribe to YouTube channels via RSS in my feedreader to get rid of the algorithm when I don‘t want

@tinker

Look at automatic ripping machine if you do go the bluray route (and make sure you research drives).

@tinker If you don't want to share your jellyfin its totally fine to just host it as a LXC via systemD quadlets.

@tinker I mean... The only good thing advertised on YouTube being a alternative that allows you to abandon YouTube is somewhat poetic

I should also add that both uBlock Origin in Firefox and FreeTube still work for YT. No ads.

@renatoram - I watch youtube on my TV... so I'd have to set up a PiHole or something, and I haven't been arsed to do that yet.

@tinker for TV I find that SkyTube Extra (not on Play Store) to cast from phone to TV still works (it just updated to work around some YT change), yeah

@tinker I've been a nebula subscriber for a few years and have been thinking of, if/when they do it again, get a life time membership so I don't have to be surprised once a year.

@barrowofdirt - Yeah, assuming $6 a month subscription, it pays for itself in 7 years (8 years and 4 months if you're used to paying annually).

This does not account for price increases in monthly or annual subscriptions in the future and also assumes Nebula will still be around in that time.

Sooo... I'm fine with a monthly fee of $6 as it's my only paid for streaming right now.
