@stefan is it using the same codec? Maybe Firefox is served AV1 and has to decode it in software.
To compare de- and encoding capabilities:

@bitpirate looks like FF gets vp9 (and is dropping frame) and chrome gets av1 is works. very weird!
also weird is the viewport seems to have a different zoom multiple?
@stefan GPU vendor?
@bitpirate Nvidia. I have selected a Nvidia driver in the additional drivers interface. Not sure if there is an Nvidia app that can better choose a driver
@stefan if not already the case, you should install libva-nvidia-driver.
@bitpirate no luck on that.
$ sudo apt install libva-nvidia-driver
Error: Unable to locate package libva-nvidia-driver
@stefan Yeah, I take that as proof of Google's malfeasance. What happens when you change your user agent to Chrome's, or use something like Invidious?
@egoldblatt I can try but I'm skeptical
@stefan How's it working?
@egoldblatt even with hardware acceleration set on FF I see cpu core switching off and topping out. Vivaldi also drops frames but doesn't use any cpu. Other wise I would blame cpu. but who knows.
@egoldblatt user agent has no effect
Vivaldi ALSO drops frames while chromium is rock solid. so weird.
@stefan have you checked whether or not hardware acceleration for video decoding is enabled in Firefox?
@MuAlphaOmegaEpsilon yes. hardware acceleration for video decoding is on
