The much bigger problem is that this software does not encrypt private messages and your user data. It does not respect your privacy by default and it will lead to a major catastrophe when millions of people will use that. Wake up!

Late last year they replied to one of my mentions about designating donations to development but not costs for operating the Mastodon.social instance, and it touched on my desire that onboarding should be rotated through a list of trusted instances in the Mastodon covenant, instead of just .social.
Glad to see they are working on this.

@evan I struggle to manage signups as a server admin. If signup is open, it gets abused by spammers and scrapers; they seem to defeat CAPTCHAs pretty handily. If I require approval, it takes me a couple hours to approve and the person never comes back.
Big corporate social media doesn't have this problem because they don't care about abuse. They trust first, let the abuse run rampant for awhile, and react only if it gets reported to excess.
