@lauren @ShaulaEvans wait: "auto-browsing"?
So, I don't have to browse the web anymore?
Cool, cool!
😵💫🤨
@lauren While I agree with the opinion that people shouldn't even entertain the thought of letting an "AI" agent control their browser or making them perform tasks for them...
Frankly, Google absolving themself of any and all responsibility and putting that burdon onto the user seems neither suspicious nor strange to me.
I mean, would you *really* have expected Google to say "We're so confident that WE take full responsibility for any issues the agent causes"?
@Bright5park Of course, they'd prefer not to take responsibility for anything no matter how many people are screwed over, however, it is likely that the legal system over time will place more and more responsibility on these firms, as Section 230 is gradually necessarily disassembled, with unfortunate collateral damage. Generative AI is going to force this situation.
@lauren
I wonder how long it will be before they change it from a subscription model to a mandatory universal rollout?
@Quasit Well, they can't force you to actually use it, but that's not the point.
@lauren theoretically: they can. if you have installed chrome, they literally could RCE if they really wanted to
@lauren it may be our sole purpose in life now is to be a litigation shield for some googlers' promo package
It's a shame people still use Google search at all. 😒
@lazysupper There is no recommended alternative with anything approaching Google's reach.
@lauren
IMO search reached the point of quality vs quantity a while ago.
@lauren It will, however, make for some interesting court cases. Wouldn't wanna be the person on trial, though.
@lauren I've switched from Google as a search engine to ecosia - seems like less AI slop and allegedly they are very environmentally responsible
@ienvision @lauren Except for the fact that they promote AI features and simply sit on top of Bing.
The irony.
I did email them to compain about the two-facedness of that.
@rexxdeane @ienvision This isn't even about search per se, it's about merging Chrome and Gemini.
@lauren @ienvision I hope someone maintains a gemini-free chromium. I don't even like having to use chromium for the sites that don't like firefox. :(
Can I ask someone to explain this to me like I'm a child who doesn't fully understand the implications. Except I'm an adult.
@lauren hahaha while everyone is distracted by the "copilot", "captain do no evil" as always taking over....
I can but warn. I cannot control.
@lauren And people will still use it and be surprised when shit inevitably hits the fan
@lauren Reverse centaur.
@lauren Like putting a “safety driver” in a self-driving car & blaming them (even criminally) when something goes wrong
