I would have loved to see a Star Trek show that would have pictured the Federation as fragmented as the European Union.
It would have been interesting instead of showing all the time utopian society dominated by humans.

@obrhoff you mean like discovery after the burn?
@obrhoff but yes, I think Star Trek never captures fully the kind of unity we have within the European Union. While many things brings us together, all that works in the a space of opposing political and economic priorities, cultural differences and there is of course all the history... I wish more series were modelled on showing how that can work even better because there is always room for improvement :)
@iamkonstantin I'm not sure anymore how deep Discovery went into it (I鈥檓 one of those toxic fans who don't like anything that came after 2005), but I think it was only a side thing from the story.
Star Trek sometimes went into this topic about identity and cultural assimilation but never fully explored that topic. I think in one DS9 episode there was a Starfleet ship fully crewed by Vulcans and some implicit racism between them and the humans.
@lp0_on_fire @obrhoff I think the entire 4* seasons of Enterprise have that theme baked into them to some degree
@iamkonstantin @obrhoff, wait, S5 of Enterprise? Details, or get thee back to your own universe.
@lp0_on_fire @obrhoff my wishful thinking took over the keyboard for a moment there
@obrhoff

Now you know how folks must have felt in 1989... it's the second next generation of Treks :)
@iamkonstantin Yeah took some time to convince them. I'm still not convinced after a decade. 馃槀
@obrhoff I think there are lot more examples of that, VOY and ENT also had quite a few. Discovery also approached the topic on several angles, the most prominent being Ni'Var after the reunification. Would've been nice to have a few more seasons but I guess Paramount wasn't in the mood. SNW also touches on that!
@iamkonstantin Definitely. Just feeling with all the stuff that is happening in Europe (Ukraine, Russia, USA, right-wing parties, corruption, etc.) that there would be so much more potential.
I think Mass Effect does a better job with it. Like the Krogan population that exploded for example and the racism between the Humans and the Turians because of the war.
@obrhoff @iamkonstantin I liked episode 4 of academy pretty much
@eugenpirogoff @obrhoff Me too! Academy is awesome
