For Reasons, I’m trying to compile a list of phrases / terms of art that are used in Greater Boston, but not really in the rest of the US. (Not words like rotary/jimmies/tonic; phrases that are uniquely local that describe concepts.)

So far I have:
- Getting Storrowed
- Allston Christmas
- French Toast Alert
- Wicked pissah (maybe…)

What else should I add to the list?

@rednikki In the general wheelhouse of what you ask after:

Spa - some convenience stores https://www.wgbh.org/news/local/2018-05-22/why-are-some-boston-area-convenience-stores-called-spas

Intersections that are decidedly irregular called Squares

Street name shortenings - Mass Ave and Comm Ave

The Big Dig

The North South Rail Link

Reverse the Curse

The Green Monstah

Why Are Some Boston Area Convenience Stores Called Spas?

A listener asks about a local, etymological quirk.

@knizer @rednikki I’ve lived here for over 20 years and I’ve never heard “spa”

@jsit @knizer @rednikki

I think of "spa" as being a Somerville-ism, not a Boston-ism.

@jsit @knizer I grew up here, and “spa” was both used for a certain type of pizza place on the South Shore and independent convenience stores (sort of like “dairy” is used in NZ). I don’t hear it a lot nowadays, though.
