A male Centrocercus urophasianus (greater sage-grouse) at dawn trying to attract a female at a mating lek. They are known for filling giant air sacks in their chests and letting out a low thumping noise. They also strut around while doing the thumping call / display. It's kind of cute, in a strange way. They are extremely sensitive birds and you can't get very close without spooking them. This photo is cropped way in.

A color landscape photo of a bird standing in dry yellow grass. The bird faces toward the camera angled toward the left. He is brown with white specks in the back, a large white fatty chest, and a dark brown head with short thin wire like protrusions sticking out. Its tail feathers from a short spiky fan in back.
