Acid mine drainage (pit lake), Broken Hills, Nevada. Chemicals that leach out of mine tailings result in high concentrations of acids in puddles, ponds, and if containment fails, streams and rivers. This is a tiny--but very poisonous--puddle. I have also seen gigantic pit lakes in Nevada. The old Anaconda Copper Mine in Yerington has a very large pit lake. It is an EPA Superfund site, that like so many others, just sits there.
From my long ignored "The Road Last Traveled" series.
Please travel safely this holiday season.

#China confirms #solarpanel projects are irreversibly changing #desert #ecosystems
A team studying one of the largest #photovoltaic parks in China, the Gonghe project in the Talatan Desert, found a striking difference between what was happening under the panels and what lay just beyond. Environment beneath the panels was noticeably healthier. The reasons track with physics: shade cools the surface and slows evaporation, letting scarce soil moisture linger longer.

I wish I had clouds like these for my photos more often! This is the southern end of the Marble Mountains in California's Mojave Desert. The Marble Mountains are famous for the Latham Shale Formation which contains one of the earliest trilobite species at ~540 million years old! After about 15mins of splitting shale, I found this Olenellus clarki(?) cephalon. Finding fossils is kind of like time traveling. 🤩
