Saw on #LinkedIn a European tech expert claiming that the #US is "by far the worst in the world in terms of privacy violations"

I honestly feel like #Asia doesn't exist to a lot of Europeans. Do they really not know how bad privacy and data laws are in many countries here? Have they not heard of the #GreatFirewall or how #Chinese users have basically zero data privacy?

Lots to critique in the US and of big tech, but that's not the way to do it.

@ncoca at the time of the tiktok ban being floated I saw people say that "china actually has stronger data privacy laws than the US" and I felt like I was going insane

@ncoca So let me make sure I have your stance clear.

No matter how bad privacy is in the US it's worse in Asia so....

Whataboutism will NEVER be a valid retort to anything.

@nurglerider Not at all what I said. Rather than saying its the "worst" - a value judgement - explain how it's bad, what impacts that has, etc.

I've covered privacy concerns of US tech platforms extensively as a journalist, & avoid using any of their products.

@ncoca I think a lot of people literally do not know. The great firewall is hardly ever covered these days.

@ncoca People can be technology experts in lots of ways that don't involve knowing what a regime is doing to its people on the opposite side of the world.

@ncoca "The World" according to Americans = The US.

"The World" according to Europeans = "The US and Europe." 🤷‍♂️
