@NunavutBirder I like the way the blanket toss picture almost merges into the counter top.
@geoffl I guess I need some figurines for the counter.
@NunavutBirder I love the magazine wallpaper idea!
@jimkennedy Inuit (post colonial contact) lined their qarmaq with newspaper and magazines. It’s a homage to that.
I really appreciate how you are showing that remoteness doesn’t exclude great visual design.
By contrast, Inuit are known for meditating their environment with visual design. Your respect for that in the space you share with your family has shone through this project.
Thanks for sharing sincerely.
@AlsoPaisleyCat much of the design ideas are thanks to my wife.
@NunavutBirder Looks marvelous, Clare! Well done!
@NunavutBirder Congrats, Clare. Very pleasing combination of elements. Well done.
@NunavutBirder Question for you: are modern windows on Baffin and north any different from those in the south ? double pane and just good weather tight seals? or do they have tripple panes , or very light gas between panes to reduce conductivity or other techniques to make them better insulated?
@jfmezei All depends. Most are double pane low e. These are salvaged windows and likely have no gas left.
@NunavutBirder I was curious if newly built homes/buildings would have "high tech" insulation considering the cost of heating (and longer heating season).

@jfmezei Things are better now, if you go back a few years a lot of the homes were shoddily constructed. Contractors coming in and trying to make a lot of money in as short of a period as possible. Now the inspection is more robust and there are air blower tests etc.
Not sure what you mean by high tech. Most houses are built with 2x6 walls insulated with fibreglass batts, often with a 1.5” dead air space between the exterior wall and drywall.
When we built the B&B it was 2x6 walls, 1/x
@jfmezei with R20 fibreglass batts, 1.5” styrofoam cladding on the exterior, and 1.5” dead air space inside.
There are about six SIP houses here. And the new apartments (our first two) are built with standing foam panels that are quite thick, and I’m not sure what else. Pretty sure there’s styrofoam cladding outside them as well. My sister-in-law moved in to one this month and the walls are quite thick.
There’s also five or six modular homes that came up last sealift but they are still 2/x
@jfmezei wrapped up as they had some delays, and now paused until spring. No idea how they are insulated.
The foreman on the apartment building mentioned to me that the apartments are very well insulated.
I suspect if I build anything again, I’ll use a double 2x4 wall with a thermal break and that would have about an R36 value. Say another cabin or a shop. 3/3
@NunavutBirder I adore that blue. Great work Clare.
