Is there any kind of entertainment or other content people are wanting to see more of on Loops or PeerTube?

@Moosader Personally, I’d love to see more channels that do video essays, or critical analysis. YouTube has so many of them, and I’ve recently become enamored with a guy who breaks down found footage horror movies called “Nightmare Films”.

For Loops, I’d mostly just be happy to get people like Jason Pagrin (John Dies at the End) on there, as he always shares really interesting nuggets to think about. Either that, or the BBC just sharing randomly funny clips from their talk shows and comedy sketches.

@Moosader One thing I’ve been kind of thinking about is a kind of “soft advocacy” campaign for the Fediverse, where we come up with lists of creators we like, talk to some of them, figure out what their needs are from a video platform, and try to court them in trying Fediverse platforms like PeerTube or Loops.

I haven’t put much thought into it so far beyond the basic idea, but I feel like it might have legs with the right messaging and connections.

@deadsuperhero @Moosader on the discovery side, I think Peertube has a curation problem. Like if I go to the PeerTube I have an account on, LinuxRocksOnline, there's neat tech videos, but it's also a firehouse of the most random videos.

TILvids is doing a good job of curating video creators. There's another instance I forget the name of that I liked. So, I think highlighting "creator instances" would be important as part of that.

@chris @Moosader Broadly speaking, I agree with you. One thing that kind of irks me about TILvids is that they explicitly forbid other instances from following their own, which actually hurts discovery from any instance that isn’t theirs. They still allow federation at the user account level, but it’s still frustrating.

I will say that they do a great job of curation and building their brand, though. I think this is an area where most of us fall short when it comes to Fediverse Advocacy.

Lol, if I check what's trending right now. There's someone's noscope montage, some anime thing, and my all-time favorite doc someone uploaded.

Definitely good stuff in there, just a bit buried at times.

Screenshot of PeerTube trending at PeerTube.LinuxRocks.Online It shows a video about newPipe, a Fedora Podcast, someone's noscope montage, an update vlog, an anime thing titled sora no otoshimono, more tech stuff, and then the "We Are Legion" doc, which happens to me one of my all-time favorite docs.

@chris @Moosader Yeah, it’s kind of ridiculous, and I’m not sure what the real solution is beyond maybe curation and maaaaybe a better recommendation algorithm.

One thing I’m experimenting with is a “Staff Picks” playlist of cool things found throughout the network. It’s limited for now, but an update to PeerTube’s markdown system might allow for videos from this playlist to get embedded in a special section on our front page.

@deadsuperhero @Moosader I like the idea of "Staff Picks".

I think it's easy when building a big tech alternative to limit ourselves to the same requirements without realizing it. Algorithm-driven trending might be one example.

Vimeo is a lot more curated, I think they even have an annual "Staff Picks".

When thinking about a more curated video platform, Vimeo might be a good model.

Screenshot of Vimeo's "Watch" page which is basically only curated staff picks. No algorithmically recommended videos are even on screen.
