Good to see @avilewis joining the ranks of Canadian politicians on the fediverse. The more politicians and journalists who move here away from US tech, the better!

And a great politician for us to get, too! IMO, it's all about the public options. That is the only way we can combat Capitalist monopoly. Avi is the one major political leader or candidate who is putting this public ownership forward in a real way.
@rwg Should we be glad if (say) #PierrePoilievre opened a Mastodon account? Would there be pressure to defederate from an instance that hosts a Poilievre account?
@mpjgregoire I would be quite surprised if that happened, but I very much appreciate this question.
I would imagine any instance hosting Poilevre would face some pressure vis a vis blocking, yes. Defederation is and always should be an option if folks do not want to associate with any given instance.
But the very fact that we can have this sort of discussion or situation is a far cry better than expecting Canadian communication to flow through US-owned, for-profit companies.
@rwg @mpjgregoire I would think the pressure to defederate a hypothetical Poilievre-hosting instance would be more due to his more-rabid twitter-culture-warrior followers rather than he himself or moderates such as our M.Grégoire, who likes to keep us honest with ourselves.
@zazzoo @mpjgregoire That's entirely possible. As always, if an instance has a terrible code of conduct -- or none to begin with -- OR it has a code but does not enforce it, that would bring about defederation, as well. It's happened many times.
@rwg @mpjgregoire For sure. There are all kinds of cesspool instances all over the fedi, mostly blocked.
@zazzoo @mpjgregoire The opportunity we have is to do this sort of content moderation work ourselves, rather than offload it to predominantly US-based companies that profit off outrage.
