#ScribesAndMakers 22 Jan: Do you have a blanket or article of clothing that someone made for you that you could tell us about?

When I was little, my mother came home with an open-weave blanket with a saw-tooth stripe pattern of yellow, light orange, dark orange, and brown. There is *one* in the wrong order, so they gave it to my mom for free. That blanket was on my bed for approximately 25 years. I retired it eventually, but I still have it. You don't throw something like that away.

#ScribesAndMakers Jan 20: When it comes to theatre, do your prefer tragedy or comedy?

I don't really prefer one over the other, but if it's a "that's all you get for the rest of your life" situation, then I choose comedy because I can always use a laugh, but I have to be In A Mood to watch the hero slowly destroy himself (occasionally herself).

#ScribesAndMakers Jan 24: What's a work of science fiction that you love? What do you love about it?

So many. Most recently, Cat Valente's SPACE OPERA is brilliant. If someone wanted to understand my sensibilities as a full human being, I'd hand them that book. It's silly as hell, and sexy, and so very sincere. It proudly wears its heart on its sleeve. "This is my heart," it says. "Do you like it?"

#ScribesAndMakers Jan 25: What's the most important thing you need to bring with you on a creative retreat?

My laptop. It's what I write on.

#ScribesAndMakers Jan 26: Tell us about a memorable live music experience.

I got to see Leonard Cohen live in Vancouver a year or two before he died. The thing that was remarkable was how *quietly* he plays. Everyone in the band is audible because no one is drowning anyone out, and the audience has to be quiet, too, if they want to hear it. It was the best mix I might have ever heard. I asked my dad, a professional live sound man, and he said Cohen is notorious for it.
