If you watch one speech this week, let it be this one: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney burns Trump’s dream world to the ground, to the applause of the entire World Economic Forum.

What a breath of fresh air, just to hear someone talk in coherent sentences, and then to be clearly saying something important.
I hope Aotearoa New Zealand casts our lot with the sane world of Mark Carney and Emanuel Macron, but for that we'll need a Labour-led government. Humpty Luxtey is practically an American already and likely to yoke us to the Tr*mp train wreck.

@randahl I listen to this confident, mature, and reality-acknowledging speech and I am afraid of the one to be delivered by #german #chancellor #merz today.

My expectations for the latter couldn't be any lower. Which brick will #merz drop next?

@abulling I will definitely watch Merz.

I am often surprised how much Germans hate Merz. I understand how you could disagree with his policies — that is fair — but Germans sometimes talk about Merz as if he is incompetent like Trump, and from my view he is objectively much more coherent. I can see why he does not have the charm like Zelenskyy or the coolness of Macron, but few politicians do.

@randahl @abulling He hasn't any charme at all and fully reflects the "white old man"-picture in its fullest. His mindset is still stuck in the 1970 (and will ever be) and his lobby-work does the rest to sharpen this image including targeting renewable energies and bowing low towards the fossil and automotive industry. Angela Merkel knew why she put him under a stone for more than two decades - but, what a pity, somehow he managed to come out of the woodwork.

Beating Trump on the coherence scale is not all that difficult. 😅
I think a lot of the disdain for Merz has to do with the course he’s laying out for the CDU. Under Merkel, the CDU was a centrist party, combining conservative/Christian values with ecological and social responsibility. Merz is erasing all of that and leading the CDU back to where the party was 30 years ago.

Merz was outside of politics for many many years (ousted by Merkel) and his views are frozen in time.

@randahl @abulling

Surprised?
I'm surprised that anyone still takes him serious.
He's as competent as a wet towel and has a spine of one.

His only objective is to maximize his political gain.

He doesn't care one bit of the German people.
He doesn't care about environment.

He's just as bad as Trump. Just not as powerful and not as demented yet.

But he is ruthless, lacks empathy and has no vision of a future.

His actions have strengthened the far right more than any other single person did.

@thoralf I am not arguing against that. I am just trying to say, Trump is a completely different beast.

Merz makes really bad chess moves, but he is not eating the chess pieces like Trump.

From a global perspective, Merz did not deliver the Taurus as he promised, which is a huge disappointment. But he is still siding with Europe. Whereas Trump has cut all Ukraine aid and is actively trying to get Zelenskyy replaced — exactly like Putin wants it.

Please allow some nuance.

@randahl @abulling

There is much more to that.

Yes, he's not behaving like a total maniac.
But he is one (if not the) worst chancellor we ever had.

He's completely lost regarding the economy and has no plan what to do.
He is constantly flip flopping his position towards Trump - which enables the orange mad man - while undermining much saner actors like Macron or Carney.

His immigration policy is almost indistinguishable from that of the AfD (or right extremists party) ...

@randahl @abulling Merz has faced backlash for divisive rhetoric and his voting record:

Rhetoric: Labeled migrant children "little pashas" and claimed asylum seekers take dental appointments from citizens (debunked).

"Stadtbild": Criticized for saying migrants negatively impact the cityscape.

Voting Record: In 1997, he voted against criminalizing marital rape. In 2006, he opposed the General Act on Equal Treatment. He remains a staunch opponent of liberalizing abortion laws.

@randahl great speech. I prefer a more diplomatic characterization of his speech, like the language PM Carney used. I think it was a great speech about how the middle countries can work together to create 21stC rules based politics, economy, security given the our new reality. Unfortunately, that new reality is required because the US president & politics aren’t reliable today. This situation is painful for many Americans, including me. Cc: @dbcurren.bsky.social

@randahl It's true. You cannot appease fascists. You cannot appease the regime currently running the US. None of us can, including those of us who live here. Resistance is our ONLY rational responce. Anything less is surrender. And you won't like the consequences of surrender.

But they are cowards, and ultimately very weak. Stand up to them, and they will fold up like any other kind of bully. Stand together AGAINST our regime. If enough of us do that, together, they must fail.

I have trouble getting too excited about mid-sized nations giving up on one world order farce in order to throw us all into a new world order farce that appears to be the same but simply has three fascist police states calling the shots regionally instead of one floundering to do it globally.

If anything I suspect we'll see fascism grow more efficient now that the big three have agreed to retreat into their respective spheres of influence and no longer have to stretch themselves.

@contrasocial respectfully, I disagree. Look at how the world has invested in defending Ukraine against a fascist Russia. That is not the US investing or China investing. That is sound democracies — of all sizes — deciding that enough is enough.

@randahl There are several YouTube uploads of this speech. Striking is the one by the National Post newspaper, a Canadian right leaning conservative and US Republican supporting paper from Konrad Black's media company. The upload shows the speech too, but the applause and standing ovation have been trimmed out. As you may know, Carney is of the Liberal party in Canada.

And if you get too excited about such a speech full of great quotable sentences. (no irony here)

Start to watch the blabbering of that elderly with the nuclear codes. And while you wondering why there is ANYONE there still in the room apparently withour ANY selfrespect whatsoever - your head will explode.

Seriously. Everyone who attempts to contact him with a diplomatic approach is losing every respect from my side.
