I DID IT!! I ordered a de-Googled Fairphone 6 with Murena e/os!!! My iPhone still works fine so I will have some time to make the transition. Nothing like a pending US invasion of Greenland to resume my migration off US big tech

@vaurora this looks very exciting. Does anyone know if it's accessible to the visually impaired? Can you get a screen reader on it? #a11y

@JustinMac84 is there a reason you can't find this out yourself?

@vaurora Android carried accessibility features for years, but its accessibility was considerably inferior to Apple's, largely because of the inaccessibility of third-party apps and graft-ons that phone providers imposed that frustrated many users. Accessibility isn't usually trumpeted as a feature of primary interest to the majority so it's something you have to dig for info about. I was looking for a leg up.

@vaurora Damn! Sorry I asked! I was attempting to find out myself, by consulting a community of people who might know more about it than I including you. I haven't heard of these phones before seeing your post, neither have I heard of EOS and don't know how much it diverges from IOS and Android, which are accessible. Plus accessibility is a spectrum and it's best to get experience from people in the know.

@vaurora what’s your plan for photos? I’m plotting my move off of Apple for a bunch of things, starting with iCloud, including photo sync. Drive I can probably sort out, but Photos feels trickier and higher stakes given the personal value of the content.

I’ve been looking around at some options, but none have really jumped out at me.

@rckenned I don't care much about photos 😊 I keep them only on my phone and I back that up to a laptop and I delete most of them. Let me know what you find!

@vaurora well done and I hope many more follow in your example. I believe it’s no longer a backup choice (in case America pulls the plug) rather an imperative from both a practical and ethical choice. I’ve already switched all my ‘tech’ services to #europeanalternatives and will shortly also be switching my phone to the Murena Fairphone option.

It looks like Fairphone 6 with e/os works with DigiD:

@vaurora I'm on a FP5 with /e/OS since almost a year, main phone. It's a very good experience from Switzerland. 100% of the apps I "need" work. Some parking and bike sharing apps do not.

@vaurora TIL /e/os exists, thanks! I just got lineageOS on my pixel3a working but immediately had to sign into a google account to get anything working.

@vaurora I'd really love to hear how that goes, especially regarding things such as Dutch banking apps and DigiD ...

@vicgrinberg @vaurora Second the follow request for DigId; looks like bunq and Wise are covered, and, yeah, I'll just keep my Amerikaanse apps on a separate phone with a separate number for just such an occasion.. (American apps REALLY don't like the idea of ANYTHING outside their borders, like a post code or a non +1 phone number. ... 😒)

Similar plan here. For me the last hurdle is support for the banking apps:

@KingmaYpe @vicgrinberg looks like ING and Wise work, so that's good! My US bank is not well supported but I only need it occasionally and can keep it on my old phone

@vaurora @KingmaYpe @vicgrinberg hmm only two of the major Australian banks currently listed as supported. That said might need to take the plunge.

@vaurora @KingmaYpe @vicgrinberg aseparate phone for banking also has the benefit of no money being stolen when your phone (and pin) gets stolen.
