Cursed hack to fix Mastodon-Threadiverse communication
If I post something to a remote community, Mastodon people reply directly to me, and it doesn't make it to the remote community. 👎
If I snuck in a mention to the community (but not in text), Mastodon would prefill the community mention and it would propagate correctly. 👍
Tell me this is a bad idea.......

i would rather mastodon fixed this in mastodon, but i wouldn't blame you if you did. mainly, mastodon should use to/cc/audience when composing a post, not tag.
we have https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/32242 which is the inverse (receiving, not posting). i just filed https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/37568 for the other direction (posting, not receiving)

But I am realizing now that NodeBB actually explicitly addresses quite a few people because we try to keep everybody in the loop.
Responding to a topic with hundreds of posts could mean a Note object with hundreds of individual users addressed in cc.
Perhaps it's wiser to not assume "addressed? generate notification.", and instead have configurable notifications based on thread/context participation.
@julian there is a world in which as:audience is a collection that tracks everyone's participation so you don't have to individually address everyone, only the people to whom your message is relevant
that's probably not going to happen as long as mastodon continues to ignore as:audience, but we can dream ;_;
addressed does == notification imo. as:to is "this directly involves me" and as:cc is "this involves me secondarily". as:audience is the sum total of everyone who should see it
@julian which is to say: if you are talking to 2 people, don't address 100 actors. address those 2 people + the audience of the conversation/forum/whatever
@julian (understandably mastodon is going to have problems with this either way, and i really wish they'd just make audience/addressing a separate field in their composer/api...)
Have you tried putting things into the to or cc?

Mm I believe the community is already addressed. Mastodon doesn't prepopulate the mention in a reply unless it is explicitly in the AP object.
