@fkamiah17 @aral I don't know if other countries have it as well, but in Germany, on German Christmas markets, a particularly popular alcoholic beverage besides mulled vine is called Lumumba.
It's cocoa with a bit of rum, and optionally cream.
Germany is famous for its Christmas markets, e.g. Nuremberg. We call them "Christkindlesmarkt". So up until my early twenties, I drank Lumumba every year.
I didn't know anything about politics or colonialism back then, and Lumumba didn't mean anything to me. One year, someone drunkenly explained why the cocoa with rum is called Lumumba. The drink is "a brown one with a shot". And he said there was some Black politician in Africa who was assassinated.
Us being stupid and in our early twenties, everyone just giggled and said, "ohh, that's dark humor."
Fast forward a few years and I don't drink any alcohol anymore. And I get upset over that "insensitivity". Most Germans don't even know, and even if they did, they'd just find it funny. And the name Lumumba is still used at German Christmas markets for cocoa with rum. To Germany, colonialism is a joke.
@davidculley @aral Even less "funny" when you consider that Lumumba died much more gruesomely than by a "shot".

When the news broke internationally, massive demonstrations broke out. Belgian embassies in Warsaw and Belgrade were sacked, with furniture being dragged out into the street and burned.
(draw your own current parallels ... )

Lumumba is beloved and revered to this day in the Congo.
At the recent African Nations Cup, a football fan attended every game dressed as Lumumba, standing completely still for the entire match in his famous pose.
