Just like #DoctorWho, it's hilarious to see slack jawed troglodytes getting upset that #StarTrek Academy has "gone woke".

Honey, honey, these shows were *always* woke. Unlike the dystopian shitstain timeline we currently live in, both of these shows were about *hope*, and *hope* is, at its core, about empatny.

Grow up. Or fuck off back to 2nd rate pew-pew scifi.

@backupbear My kindest interpretation is that they missed the non subtle subtext the first time round and despite being "fans" have never rewatched as grown-ups!

@leiawelsh @backupbear

I originally watched Star Trek in the ’90s. By then, the cold war was over, so having a Russian was just 'oh, he's a human. Why do so many of the rest sound American?' I didn't grow up with the US racial history and we'd just had a female prime minister, so having a black woman in the bridge crew was just normal. If anything, not TOS and TNG were notable for how few women they had and how stereotyped their rôles were.

So I can see people my age watching them and missing that bit of the social commentary. But then there are the plot lines. So many Star Trek plots are overtly anti-prejudice narratives they're hard to miss.

@backupbear I mean

Maybe a screenshot or composite from the original Star Trek episode "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield" with 2 aliens with half white and half black faces but they're at war because which side of the face is black or white makes a difference to them. Or something. I need to watch that episode

@giflian @backupbear

The original series had a Russian bridge officer at the height of the Cold War. It had a female black bridge officer during the peak of the civil rights movement. It had the first interracial kiss on American TV. And that’s before you get into any of the actual plot lines, which covered prejudice in many forms.

@david_chisnall @backupbear I started to rewatch TOS in order last year and noticed they got into direct anti-racist messaging within the first season

Screenshot from Star Trek The Original Series, an early episode called “Balance of Terror”. It has Captain Kirk on the bridge, talking to another officer sitting at the helm (I think). Kirk says:

"Well, here's one thing you can be
sure of Mister. Leave any bigotry in
your quarters, there's no room for it
on the bridge."
