@aqunt @jmts Meille vaihtaa väkeä muilta instansseilta seuraavista syistä:
1. Merkkirajoitus. Moni haluaa kirjoittaa yli 500 merkkiä, meillä on 10000.
2. Teemat ja lisäominaisuudet, meillä on esimerkiksi näkövammaisille tehty saavutettava teema, lumisadetta joulun aikaan ja kaikkea muuta kivaa mitä keksitään: https://help.mementomori.social/mementomori.social/instance-features - Lisäksi käytössä tietysti uusimmat ja tulevat viralliset Mastodon-ominaisuudet kuukausia ennen muita, koska haluamme kokeilla ja testata niitä, se on meillä vähän kuin "talon tapa".
3. Vanhan instanssin ylläpidosta ei kuule, eikä päivityksiä Mastodoniin tule - meillä ylläpitäjät ovat näkyvillä ja käytämme uusinta kehitysversiota.
Sitten tietysti iso osa tulee suositusten kautta, kun kaverit ovat täällä, on helppo liittyä.

When Rolle wrote about his social anxiety on Saturday (https://mementomori.social/@rolle/115911013399419366), following our conference call on Thursday, and did so in a single, long toot, I found myself thinking again about the pros and cons of character limits higher than Mastodon's default 500.

My impulse was that I wanted to reply in a single toot as well. Why? Rolle's longer-than-default post felt nicely self-contained. I thought that a thread of replies would feel fragmented.
Character limits have been discussed exhaustively over the years. On a freshly installed Mastodon instance, the default limit for toots and replies is 500 characters. Instance administrators can change this setting, though.

That 500-character limit encourages users to keep each post to a single thought, which makes the “river of news” easier to scan, digest, and respond to. It also makes it simpler to reply to a specific paragraph within a longer story, or to fork a discussion around that single point.
Out of curiosity (and apologies as this must be a question you’ve answered many times before): @rolle, what were the main pros and cons that led you to choose a 10,000-character limit?

The CSS/design is still very important to me. The round avatar and soft round icons make for a pleasant online experience. :blobcatphoto:
In addition, there are a lot of emojis, which for me are part of the idea of bringing joy to other people and lightening up the messages. It can also help to soften some “harsh words.” :ablobwave:
The extended character limit is also important to me. Not because I want to write texts that are 10,000 characters long, but even simple thoughts often exceed 500 characters. I am convinced that a large part of disputes on the internet are due to misunderstandings caused by abbreviated formulations. :meow_code:
