We've reverted the visibility selection modal back to a dropdown, like it used to be. The modal required six clicks and was a disaster in terms of accessibility and usability.

In 2022, before starting my own instance, I was worried it would feel like a burden, one more thing to be responsible for. But I've come to realize it's been one of the most enjoyable projects of my life. Sure, there's more pressure now that there are hundreds of daily users, but I get to do things my way, experiment with alphas, and learn so much about Ruby, JavaScript, React, job queues, sysops, and more. And then there's the social side of it all.
I've been focusing on Mastodon Bird UI, but lately I've also started digging into the Mastodon core. There have been a few things I've wanted to change. I'm constantly improving my skills and picking up new things. I also try to take it easy and not stress too much.
Of course, I don't always have time for everything. I get tired and sometimes lose focus, I'm human. But I never stay down for long.
I want to thank our users for being so patient with me. There will be bugs. There will be changes. But I'm all in and doing my best. Thanks for being here.

I like making my Mastodon fork behave exactly the way I want. One feature I miss from other platforms is videos that autoplay and loop muted. I'm going to implement that in my fork, just like on those other platforms. It will respect the system-wide reduce motion setting.
My goal is to keep Mastodon core as close to vanilla as possible and not overload it with features like glitch-soc, just improve the things I want, both in UI and functionality.
Being a MastoAdmin is nice, you get to build your own tools and learn new things.

The photos and other media on our instance are malfunctioning due to Cloudflare outage. Sorry about this, but there's nothing we can do on our end. Media is something we can't easily self-host cost-efficiently, we're talking terabytes of data.

We've successfully upgraded our Mastodon server to v4.6.0-alpha.1+mementomods-2025-11-15, along with Mastodon Bird UI 4.0.0rc1. This update includes today’s latest daily build, so everything should be as up to date as possible. The version brings some minor UI improvements.

When I got the idea to start my own Mastodon server in October 2022, many people asked, "What will happen to your server when you die? Will it just disappear? Aren't you afraid you'll lose all your data forever?"
Well, yes. No shit, Sherlock. But it'll be mine while I’m alive.
Websites come and go over the decades. Nothing is permanent. So why should a Mastodon server be any different?
Epicurus once said: Why should I fear death? If I am, then death is not. If death is, then I am not. Why should I fear that which can only exist when I do not?
While I embrace the mindset of focusing on the present, I do everything I can to keep this server running for as long as I live and breathe - and maybe even beyond.

My heart skipped a beat when I went to clean up the local dev database for mementomori.test. For some reason, it was connected to the production S3 media library and started deleting files... luckily, it only managed to remove a few orphaned ones. Phew. Now I'll make sure it uses proper .env.development.
Mementomori.social was created on November 5, 2022, and here we are, almost three years later.
The Ultra Accessible and Ultra Accessible Plus themes for the vision impaired on Mastodon have now been fixed for our instance. The differentiated colors were reset after the last update, but mentions, hashtags, and links now have their distinct colors again.
