I’ve turned off automatic updates on my Mac to ensure I don’t run into the same bullshit with the automatic iOS 26 update on the phone and I suggest you do the same.
Keep the security updates toggle on, though.
First time I’ve had to take such action in about two decades of owning a Mac.

@aral A short term fix for the phone is to turn off automatic updates and turn on iOS 18 beta updates.

@aral I updated my iPhone because security updates are not delivered to supported devices, sorry
@aral oops, too late 😬. I did it 2 days ago after months refusing any update 😅
Too late here @aral just updated to Tahoe 26.2 to make sure my Mac runs even slower now 👍 😠
