THE STAR KIST SMELL
i grew up in Mayagüez, miles from the Star Kist processing plant but downwind from it. can’t remember if it was at 3 or 5pm, but everybody had their watches set to their afternoon firebomb: the time they burn the fish remains and stink up miles and miles of #PuertoRico’s coast.
i have avoided their products for ages. to me, they’re a symbol of the poverty of avoiding work or housing close to them.
well… am broke enough, just opened a can of their tuna. it was on sale 😣

@joelpomales no, chacho, el MEJOR olor de Mayagüez era el de la cervería India. esos jijosdepu coordinaban la producción de malta con la hora de salida de las escuelas públicas. a las 3pm, diario, si guiabas cerca del R.U.M., ese olor era divino.
cuando era chiquita había un Dairy Queen al lado y eran los únicos que te hacían un float con malta India.
