THE STAR KIST SMELL
i grew up in Mayagüez, miles from the Star Kist processing plant but downwind from it. can’t remember if it was at 3 or 5pm, but everybody had their watches set to their afternoon firebomb: the time they burn the fish remains and stink up miles and miles of #PuertoRico’s coast.
i have avoided their products for ages. to me, they’re a symbol of the poverty of avoiding work or housing close to them.
well… am broke enough, just opened a can of their tuna. it was on sale 😣

There is nothing more disempowering than watching your own homeland turned into a launchpad for imperial violence. #PuertoRico is being used to attack our sisters and brothers in #Venezuela — planes, military equipment, the whole damn war machine — taking off from our soil.
Right now, Puerto Rican airspace is locked down, not to protect our people, but to facilitate aggression against another population that’s already under siege.
This is colonialism in real time. We don’t consent. We are not your aircraft carrier. And we sure as hell are not your proxy for attacking #Venezuela.
Reminds me of the bloody US invasion of Panama in 1989 to forcibly remove Manuel Noriega. Many innocent people died. My heart goes to the people of Venezuela.

It certainly seems that this administration wants to wage war on Latinxs on every possible front. It angers me and freaks me the fuck out. And though #PuertoRico is in a special and less risky situation because it's a colony of the US, I worry so much about how it will be used and abused during any conflict.

so after Las Octavitas, Día de Reyes and Fiestas de San Sebastián, many portorros declared Las Navidades officially over when we burned our arbolitos de crísmas on THE 2ND OF FEBRUARY.
so for +20 years of my life, #christmas lasted for 2½ months

These projects aren’t just temporary disaster responses. They are models of long-term resilience and food independence.
