I live in an UK 1950s semi. I've slapped solar and a battery into it, and over the next few years I want to step up the energy efficiency+eco impact with retrofitting.

Anybody know of any useful blogs or resources? Any localish companies (North East) who can help?

I'm thinking about #insulation, #underfloorheating, #heatpump, what else? #passivehouse

@coldclimate Take a look at https://www.livinglab.energy/home

They had some great info when I looked - they'll also send you interesting offers for efficiency related things.

I can also recommend buying / renting a thermal camera while it is still cold outside. Use that to spot any heat leaks from your property.

@coldclimate can only point you to our personal experience of fitting an air-source heat pump in a 1910s solid-wall house (i.e. not well insulated; we’re not allowed solar or external cladding insulation owing to being in a conservation area). https://coffeenow.moomop.uk/post/2025/11/heat-pump-install/

The gas boiler in our house has definitely been on its way out over the past few years; not only that, so have several of the radiators, and having lived all spring with them off to prevent leaking, the looming onset of summer’s end, meant it was time for decisions. The cheapest option would have been just to replace the gas boiler. But that’s no way to decarbonise your heating…
