The thing about relying on content warnings to protect yourself is that it requires the cooperation and consensus of everyone in the Fediverse. More effective and realistic is setting up filters. I have a list of filtered words, hashtags, and phrases for things I don't want to see, and it keeps those things off my timeline regardless of other people's choices.

@RachelThornSub I do the same, it’s a bit like choosing which newspaper or magazine to pick up from the pile when I’m reading. A way of deciding what kind of content I want to see and when.

For that matter, I wish I could use such filters on the news sites/apps I use. I would filter out men's sports, business news, entertainment news, and I'd choose not to display photos of people like Trump, Stephen Miller, and JKR.
@RachelThornSub I still have fond memories of using Stop Tony Meow made by @dannolan to replace Abbott photos with lovely fluffy kittens. I also legit used it for testing Drupal websites, because it relied on the word “Abbott” in alt text, and lots of Drupal websites 15 years ago had a broken image module that wasn’t using the alt text when rendering the page.
I’d absolutely use an app like that right now to filter all kinds of stuff.
