When M5 MacBook Airs launch, presumably this spring, I'll likely replace my 2021 M1 Pro MacBook Pro. In my kinda retired state, I find I just don't need or use the pro features, and don't mind living That Dongle Life™ for connecting things. I'd rather have a great 15-inch screen, killer battery life and minimal weight.

I'd love to hear from former MBP owners who switched to an Air. How happy are you with it? Any regrets?

@dsilverman Switched 2 of my adult kids to 13” Airs after their 13” Pros were end-of-lifed. They love the colors & the light weight, never connect anything to them besides USB-C drives for backup so fewer ports not a problem. My M3 Max 16” Pro very fast & capable, couldn’t live with an Air for the things I do.

@dsilverman I formerly had a Pro and now have an Air. I love it for how light it is, and if you don't need the Pro features (I actually have a Mac Studio for my desktop, so I don't need it on my laptop) then it is a great laptop. As far as the dongle situation, I just got one of these and have every port I need now. 🙂

@dsilverman Haven’t made the jump yet, but thinking of a similar move. I’ve been experimenting with various alternatives (my wife’s Air, an iPad, and — I need to say this on the Fediverse — Linux, both GUI and command line).

My main conclusion, so far, is that I’m the only person in the world who will miss the Touch Bar. More generally, I’ve been surprised at how little computer I actually need and can’t imagine ever considering an Air underpowered for my needs.

@dsilverman I have a Macbook Air from 2020 but I use daily my Macbook Pro 15 from 2012 with Linux installed. It depends on the things you want to do with your machine. I cut even videos for instagram on my Mbp 2012. Every hardware you don t buy is better for the environment.
