Happy #NationalBirdDay!

This Black-necked Stilt, a mother-to-be enjoying some quiet foraging time while her mate took his turn on their nest, was my favorite lifer sighting last year.

This year’s first fave lifer sighting candidate - a Western Kingbird quite far away from its home - delighted us on just the second day of the year. A quick sighting from the back on a cold, cloud-covered day made for less than ideal pictures, but you can see a bit of its distinguishing lemon yellow belly if you zoom in.

A female Black-necked Stilt forages in shallow blue marsh water while her mate sits on their nest. She is an elegant shorebird with incredibly long, vivid pink legs, a thin black bill, and graphic plumage that is black and dark brown on the top and crisp white underneath.

A Western Kingbird perches on a skinny, bare tree branch against a cloudy sky. Facing away and slightly right from the camera, it is a fairly large flycatcher with a gray head, olive back, brownish-gray wings, and lemon yellow belly.
