so of course in the political reality that surrounds the action of the movie, one must imagine that the death race started as a way for local paramilitaries and militias to round up undesirables and sacrifice them in the name of sport, and the only reason the race is relatively peaceful and kills are opportunistic is because the continual purge has "cleared the field" so to speak. so vigilante violence and the death race largely supplanted police as the primary mechanism of social order, which is why running the death race is the primary political achievement and promise of the ruling authoritarian regime
so then the capitulation just there, of allowing race officials to be scored upon, is the sign of a waning regime, where they must promise something like the rule of law to keep the public in line #monsterdon

does the start and end location of the race vary year by year? if not, then you would imagine a heavy population shift to the deep south and pacific northwest, which are really far out of the way.
and then at some point in the race's history cars that could go fast enough to make the corner run would become a suddenly productive strategy mowing down the last population centers
another background reality of this movie has to be that most of the public lands have been sold off and tresspassing laws are violently enforces, so that the roads are really the last public place to be #monsterdon
