The latest upgrade to the cabin. The wind turbine has been installed. The weather is crazy warm here. -4 this morning. -7 last night when I got the turbine up. Which made it great for my hands, but this is January in the high Arctic. #CabinLife #Nunavut

The hope is that this will lessen the reliance on the generator during the dark season until solar can take over.

A flash photo in the dark showing a wind turbine atop a pole. Several heavy rocks are on the base of the pole. Did I mention they were heavy.

@NunavutBirder I am super curious to hear more about this

I've got really consistent wind here about 6 months or of the year but limited sun (I'm on the coast) and I've thought that a little windmill could be just the ticket

@NunavutBirder what power are you hoping to get from that?

@tinheadned It’s not a very windy spot so probably not much. I’m hoping to extend the time between running the generator. It’s a 48v turbine that is only going to the battery. I doubt we’ll be able to do away with using the generator during the dark season. And once the sun comes back in a little more than a month we likely won’t need either back up.

@NunavutBirder Ah, so it's a leisure battery top-up type thing?

Also, going back from Ottawa to the UK, it feels darker in the winter. But we still get 7.5h daylight!

@tinheadned We keep the power and heat on all the time. We get about 2.5/3 days with the battery and then run a tank full on the generator to charge it again. This will hopefully extend the time before we need to fire up the generator. And soon we won’t need either.

@NunavutBirder nice - just for my calibration, how much power is this turbine expected to generate? 50W peak? Can't quite tell the scale also, how high is it? Fun times in any case, I hope it helps!

@bert_hubert it’s an Air40, 48v. So at 5.5 m/s constantly you’d get 40 kW a month. But we will not see that. It’s 12 feet high.

@NunavutBirder that is bang on 50W! Well, 54W. Thanks!

@NunavutBirder Cool! Or, actually warm. It's much colder here in Ottawa. But I'm so curious to see how it performs in the high Arctic.
