Today, after reading Vlad Bunea via @gerrymcgovern, I learn of @DegrowthCollective who made one post here 31 months ago.
There are a couple of links from their link tree to accounts on Substack.
As with my observations on Upstream Podcast earlier this week, my 2026 hope is that we begin to get more voices that have an affinity with degrowth walking the walk of being in the Fedi, cos it’s degrowth-adjacent.
Reaching the masses *as well* is fine. But only doing platform capitalism is… awkward

They have 6 principles for urban degrowth which I really like (split over this and the next 3 posts):
1. Residential buildings that no longer contribute to environmental destruction, but instead catalyze human and ecological flourishing by helping build communities and reduce the consumption of resources and energy

…2. Transport systems that are no longer produced by environmentally destructive machines, but instead prioritize ecological and social sustainability, granting people access to healthy food, care, and meaningful social engagement.

…3. Institutions that cease fetishizing private property as a right, but instead pursue forms of autonomy and democracy that center on essential needs such as social care, health, meaningful social engagement, and human well-being.
4. Planning laws that no longer aim to ensure ever-increasing land values, but instead recognize land’s social value and promote regeneration within ecological limits.

…5. Ways of providing resources that cease producing carbon, pollution, and waste, but instead foster human health, regenerate ecologies, and are integrated into local communities.
6. A societal work ethic that is no longer dominated by competition and individualism, but instead promotes mutual understanding, trust, and compassion, thereby allowing all communities affected by planning decisions to honestly engage with one another.
…A thought experiment, where the “no longer” bit in the above 6 principles is taken out and only the positives are left:
1. Residential buildings that help build communities and reduce the consumption of resources and energy.
2. Transport systems that grant people access to healthy food, care, and meaningful social engagement.
3. Institutions centred on essential needs such as social care, health, meaningful social engagement, and human well-being…
…4. Planning laws that recognize land’s social value and promote regeneration.
5. Ways of providing resources that foster human health, regenerate ecologies, and are integrated into local communities.
6. A societal work ethic that promotes mutual understanding, trust and compassion.
…What I’m trying to do with those last two posts is explore ways for the left to talk to the right.

The internet consumes a lot of electricity. 1021 TWh per year to be precise. To give you some perspective, that’s more than the entire United Kingdom.
From data centres to transmission networks to the billions of connected devices that we hold in our hands, it is all consuming electricity, and in turn producing carbon emissions equal to or greater than the global aviation industry.
