A major milestone for next generation Covid vax: The first clinical trial for a pancoronavirus formulation of an existing vaccine was registered.

There are more clinical trial results for a vax for people with immunocompromise, & news on mucosal vax trials. Plus 12 preclinical reports.

In my monthly update @PLOS

Thank you very much for these updates. As a layperson, I am wondering where to draw the line between "durable" and "pan".

According to ⬇️, "pan" also «involves targeting specific, unchanging regions of the virus shared across different strains», using «“mosaic vaccines,” which present antigens from multiple viral strains simultaneously» or «“universal antigens” that can trigger a protective response against numerous coronaviruses.»

Would you mind to explain?

@marcel "Durable" and "pan": I put the vax in durable/varient-proof if it's targeting multiple Covid variants only, and in pan when it's targeting other coronaviruses as well as Covid.

@marcel There are several ways being tried.

I think of the mosaic vaccines as drug combos. The antigens are tiny parts of the viruses. I think of "universal antigen" as a part of a virus that is common to multiple viruses. Hope that helps!

@hildabast @marcel And of course we are doing the trials to see how universal they end up being!

Thanks for this part of the explanation as well. I should have made it more explicit that I was trying to understand the boundary between "durable" and "pan", but I really squeezed the last character out of the available message length.

Looking forward to more of your work this year as well. (And Happy New Year!)

@hildabast Psst! Pancoronavirus section: "with some results for 3 of them marked *" What does the asterisk *mean*?

@hildabast I would like to suggest that in this sentence:

"So I moved the tables tracking vaccines from the post to my personal website." you make a link to your personal website.
