A common experience, to the point that there is a cottage industry of medical billing advocates in the US. While they don't work for free, their services cost much less than they save you on the bill-- as with an accountant. Some of them even charge a percentage of what they save you, rather than charging by the hour.
It's also great to have one when you're, y'know, SICK and too stressed and tired to deal with these issues.
