I have intentionally avoided purchasing a (so called) smart TV since they became a thing.

Part of the reason is that — they are spyware.

Apparently, there is now a court case about it.

@reiver In 2017 the US FTC fined Vizio $2.2million for doing real time capture of what people were watching.

That was 2017.

"VIZIO to Pay $2.2 Million to FTC, State of New Jersey to Settle Charges It Collected Viewing Histories on 11 Million Smart Televisions without Users’ Consent"

VIZIO, one of the world’s largest manufacturers and sellers of internet-connected “smart” televisions, has agreed to settle charges that it installed software on its TVs to collect viewing data on consumer TVs without consumers’ knowledge or consent.

@reiver Our newer tv isn't online, everything comes through the Apple TV box. I should dig out a player for physical media though.

@reiver I have a fairly recent smart tv and put it behind a pihole DNS filter. That thing makes more requests per day than all other devices combined. And 99% of them are tracking oder ads related.

When I start it now it is unable to load its start menu 😂 but normal tv and hdmi input still works.
