Looking for advice from folks who deal with executive dysfunction fucking with motivation.

My kid has asked for help and advice. They describe, for instance, being able to get up easily when there is an outside reason for them to get up, but not being able to get up when they want to without an outside reason. To me this sounds like motivation dysfunction.

I deal with a lot of executive dysfunction issues, but motivation has rarely been one of them, so I'm not familiar with tools or techniques for managing this.

Suggestions or shared experiences, especially from AuDHD folks, would be much appreciated.

@JessMahler for general stuff it was just learning to do the thing I need to do in the brief moment where I have the motivation, & not talking myself into doing it later.

For getting up when I don't have someone relying on me being anywhere; needing to pee helps 😆 I keep a litre sports bottle by the bed and drink as much as I can on waking up. This is actually to help me wake up, but it has the added bonus of filling my bladder.

I struggle with this. One trick is to apply what you already know works: Schedule something where someone else expects you to show up. Works best if you need to leave the house.

You’ll get even more dopamine if you’ll be looking forward to it, so see if it can be something you’ll enjoy. It doesn’t need to last long, it just needs to activate you and put you in motion. Be sure to take pride in knowing you made it happen for extra reward!

@JessMahler for me lack of motivation means I am empty and either need a nap or meds.
