Native HLS support means smoother playback and less reliance on clunky plugins. That鈥檚 great for usability鈥攂ut there鈥檚 a catch.
HLS is not an open standard. It鈥檚 Apple鈥檚 proprietary format, and now Google is baking it even deeper into the web. That pulls us further away from truly open alternatives like WebM and AV1, which avoid royalties and tight corporate control.
Progress? Yes.
A step toward a more closed web? Also yes.
