It's white people's responsibility to stop racism.

It's men's responsibility to stop sexism.

It's cis people's responsibility to stop transphobia.

It's straight people's responsibility to stop homophobia.

It's able people's responsibility to stop ableism.

It's always the responsibility of the people in a position of privilege to stop the oppression they are benefiting from.

If you are part of a privileged group, in one way or another, get to it.

@Em0nM4stodon not everyone "in a privileged group" actually enjoys the full scale of the privilege, and putting the responsibility on only one side of something is not the most efficient way to move forward. Shared responsibility toward common goals, it's more demanding but yields longer lasting results.

@Em0nM4stodon The responsibility yes, but it is often the people who won't act. The rich won't solve poverty.

You then end up with women+ fighting sexism, queers fighting homophobia and transphobia, poc fighting racism, and the poor fighting poverty. And all to busy with abolishing the systems where they do hold privilege.

And those with intersections, having to fight it all...

Our privileged lens isn’t gonna help. Our position in privilege is.

Offering (in your post) arbitral statement without RACI (responsible, accountable, consulted and informed) you just heat up the discussion for your private gains with no ability to tackle the subject. Please, present solution instead of arbitral opinion.

@Em0nM4stodon 100%. The first part is hard. You have to withstand the (to us) shocking reaction of your fellow men/whites/straights/etc. when you speak against their prejudice. They will *turn* on you. I'm still surprised when it happens bc 95% of the time, they treat my like a fellow person of privilege. It feels like an instantaneous transformation.

It's important to understand they're reacting to you like a threat to their privilege *bc that's what you are*. That's good. That's the point.

Theres no such thing as a "white person".

White as a race isn't a positive definition. In Virginia law of 1692, it was "not negroe and not Indian".

Now, its also not Asian, pacific islander, African, etc etc etc. Basically its European. And when convenient, also NOT Irish, and NOT Italian. But a positive definition? There isn't one, and never has been one.

And, what exactly is "white"? Even when the white nationalists asked themselves on stormfront, they didn't have an answer.

so so so many people read a sentence like the above and interpret it as if they need to give away or forfeit the privilege they have. (and then, get defensive)

it's not a zero sum game. lift others up if you can. work with others for change if you can. use your privilege to make a difference

it's not invalidating the struggles you faced, to say someone else has more challenges in this society.

@Em0nM4stodon This is categorically false.

These discriminations you list arent created by individuals and groups that may benefit from these arent monoliths or necessarily actively perpetuating it.

This seems more like righteous finger pointing + posturing than a real analysis.

My take is that capitalists have taken advantage of these discriminations and everyone else ocassionally discriminates only BECAUSE cappies have already made it practical and beneficial to discriminate.

@atlas667 @Em0nM4stodon Say it with me now:

"Just because it's not your fault, doesn't mean fixing it isn't your responsibility."

"Privilege does not mean you never suffer. It means that, all other things being equal, a single difference provides an advantage."

The oppressed will always be less capable of overturning their oppressors than those outside the oppressed group. Therefore, even if it's not your fault, as someone with the privilege to be unencumbered by a given form of oppression, it is your responsibility to do more than the oppressed themselves.

One of the features of privilege is that the related ignorance & comfort make it unlikely for most to recognise & accept responsibility for change. Like it or not, those without privilege have an essential role to play.

Privilege is to be used for betterment of those who don’t partake in it.

Do not mistake local signs of privilege for global ones, however.

There are people you’ll see as white that had their entire cultures put in coma by genocide. There are non-white people that partook in racially fueled genocides while we were alive.

„It’s white people’s responsibility to stop racism” is itself a racist statement. Also, fuck every white supremacist that decides this intends to support them.

@Em0nM4stodon The problem with "It's white people's responsibility to stop racism" is that it can be really hard, with exceptions like Trump, to find out who the racists are. The town I live in voted 80% for Kamala Harris and anyone going around here making racist comments would pretty quickly land in the persona non grata category. So any racists living here would tend to keep it to themselves.

@iranon This of course doesn't mean that the oppressed cannot fight the system of oppression they are subjected to. Simply that, morally, the oppressed shouldn't have to fight this system. The oppressor should be responsible for dismantling the system of oppression, not the oppressed.

@flux Of course!

The responsibility belongs to the privileged to break the system of oppression. But, the privileged must listen to the experiences of the oppressed (and seek this information to educate themselves), and must support the oppressed's work to break this system as well.

However, the oppressed often has less resources for this battle, and the consequences of fighting the oppression are much more serious for the oppressed. The oppressed will often fight the oppression (sometimes alone, sadly) even while subjected to it, but morally shouldn't have to.

Therefore, it is first the moral responsibility of the privileged to acknowledge this privilege and use it to break the system of oppression.
