Iryna's Law is awful.

"Unsecured bonds and custody releases are not permitted for a defendant who has been convicted of three or more offenses (each of which is at least a Class 1 misdemeanor) in separate sessions of court within the previous 10 years."

You can catch a class 1 misdemeanor in NC for being somewhere that there is a "no trespassing" sign or where someone has asked you to leave before. It's also a popular charge for cops to use when they just want an excuse to arrest someone, even if they are on public property. Who is going to say the cop didn't tell you to leave?

We're about to see a lot more unhoused people warehoused in #NC jails.

This law is part of a war against due process happening in the US. Make no mistake, due process in this country is a myth, but in recent years there has been a lot of writing coming out of right wing think tanks advocating attacks on things that would help people fight bullshit charges. Attacks on bail funds have been one part of this.

Just want to add for anyone who doesn't understand what jails do: The right to a fair and speedy trial is also a myth. When you are in jail they want you to plea out. That's your way out of jail, either back outside or to start serving a prison sentence (which is probably a better place to be than the county jail). If you actually want to fight a bogus charge, they will drag out your day in court for years. You can be locked in jail for years despite not being convicted of any crime.
