Hey Y'all, Asheville's premier anarchist bookstore @firestorm had a rough year, and they're trying to figure out how to navigate into next year strong.

They sell online, and I'm sure that a post holiday order would go a long way towards helping them close their '25 gap.

https://firestorm.coop/

Firestorm was inspirational to me in building #HemlockBazaar. I wouldn't have had the confidence to build a weird leftist bookstore in the middle of Appalachian mountains without their example.

If you find yourself in #asheville please consider dropping by and exchanging some currency for some goods. They're good folks and their mission is important.

see: https://retro.social/@firestorm@kolektiva.social/115792884084650487 for info from them directly.

Iryna's Law is awful.

"Unsecured bonds and custody releases are not permitted for a defendant who has been convicted of three or more offenses (each of which is at least a Class 1 misdemeanor) in separate sessions of court within the previous 10 years."

You can catch a class 1 misdemeanor in NC for being somewhere that there is a "no trespassing" sign or where someone has asked you to leave before. It's also a popular charge for cops to use when they just want an excuse to arrest someone, even if they are on public property. Who is going to say the cop didn't tell you to leave?

We're about to see a lot more unhoused people warehoused in #NC jails.

This law is part of a war against due process happening in the US. Make no mistake, due process in this country is a myth, but in recent years there has been a lot of writing coming out of right wing think tanks advocating attacks on things that would help people fight bullshit charges. Attacks on bail funds have been one part of this.

If you live in #Asheville and you think you're seeing bears more often than ever, you're right. I've gone from seeing them a couple of times a year to a couple of times a week. Here's a reminder from John Boyle to be careful around them. They're more in danger from us, though, than we are from them.

I think I'll call him George. Yes, another day, another bear. Life's never dull in #Asheville. His bigger brother was by earlier.

My friend in #Asheville, NC sent me a photo of my book at Firestorm Books. Happy to see #JamesSpooner’s book, High Desert, right below. It’s a comic about growing up a #biracial #punk in Southern California.

At the zine event I just did, people in the audience had heard of the #AfroPunk festival but never heard of the DIY #documentary that it was named for. Spooner drove around the country back in the early 2000s interviewing #BlackPunk rockers who, at the time, were racially isolated in their respective scenes. This movie changed the entire landscape for everyone but especially Black kids in the punk scene, giving a voice to our various experiences. You can find the video online for free, I believe.

A bookshelf filled with a variety of books and zines across multiple genres. Titles include "Shotgun Seamstress," "Down with the System," and "Queercore: How to Punk a Revolution." The collection features themes of music, social issues.
