It feels so incredibly liberating in those uncertain times to grab a copy of my whole photo library, from iCloud onto my Linux machine, and make a backup on an external disk.

And really, it begs the question. How did we ever let that happen.

How did we accept to get our every digital move controlled by one of the two mobile behemoths?

How did we fail our education system so much that it failed us as digital citizens?

@thibaultamartin Hey 👋 how did you get the Photos off of iCloud? I was thinking about doing the same every now and then

@thibaultamartin Completely agree but for most consumers, there is no simple alternative.

I do hope personal clouds will continue to grow but they have a long way to go for mainstream adoption.

@scottjenson @thibaultamartin This, I would bet that the main reason is that managing local data is incredibly annoying.

Both when it comes to accessing those from multiple devices, including old->new, as well as needing a dissertation in data backup and recovery.
