Dear Apple users,

No, your Apple iPhone is not more private, and YOU can prove it to yourself.

Sign up for either AdGuard DNS or Control D DNS, and enable logging. Be sure to use that DNS profile.

A fresh stock copy of iOS with no 3rd party apps installed will call home more than a Google Pixel or Microsoft Windows 11 Ltsc.

@decryption That was a nice story. The early phones were pretty slow, the original and 3G especially, hence the 3GS with S for speed.

I still have my second iPhone, a 3GS. It's fun to get out now and then and bask in the glorious non-flat, detailed UI.

@arisummerland @Suzdal92 Same! I had an iPhone mini for years because I liked the small size, but when the 16 came out with the silent button and camera button I was like oh okay I guess I can deal with a slightly larger phone.

But I was hoping the silent button meant SILENT and was losing my mind when videos would start blasting but I think you just solved that too! (I won’t know until I randomly scroll over a dumb video, but I’m pretty confident that was it)!

Thank you again!

@Alice Apple calls what you call the #iPhone silent button the “Action button”; you can change what it does in the Settings app under “Action Button.” Your videos were blasting because the default “silent” action only silences the ringer.

You could maybe make it run a Shortcut instead that toggles both the ringer and toggles the volume to and from 0%. You’d make that in the Shortcuts app.

Here’s Apple’s documentation on how to use and customize the button.

A friend with an iPhone want to read and write PGP-encrypted emails: what's the cheapest and simplest approach I can suggest him?

I know nothing about Apple products, but I guess they have a default mail agent. Yet I can't find online how to configure PGP.

@9to5Mac now this would be a reason to change to GrapheneOS. Even if on-device, Apple has no right to scan and censure anything, unless activated - AI is never just on-device and we've had this subject before.

Another reason not to upgrade to iPhone 17 too, as Apple cultivates unpredictable policies - one might just end up with a piece of scrap-metal in your hands overnight.
