The Oxford Word of the Year is "rage bait" 🙁

In a world seemingly filled with "rage bait", we're building technology that lets you connect authentically. That's why we carefully designed consent-respecting Quote Posts. Free speech isn’t about giving hate a megaphone, it’s about protecting the voices that need it most.🛡️

Mastodon’s community-driven moderation proves we can foster open dialogue and safety, without algorithms or agendas.

@Mastodon Can confirm it has worked. But it worked even better when boosting was the default and quote was in the context menu.

Incentives matter. Behaviour is often guided by incentives more than intent.

Things could remain better for longer if you left that setting for admins to configure. I’m sure many would choose the former behaviour.

@Mastodon You need to convince the politicians that #Mastodon is not a “rage bait” social network, as some states in the #UnitedStates 🇺🇸 will require ALL public social networks to place a warning label on their content if the site has residents who use the platform.

𝕏 is fighting this pending bill in #NewYork 🗽, but #California has already enacted this as law: https://x.com/darnell/status/1996692368028839983

Update: Other states may pass similar laws, which will make new user registrations complicated.

@darnell ¿Esto es real? Es decir. A qué te refieres con "residentes"?

@dbencom If a social network has a resident from California who uses the social network, then California will claim a weird jurisdiction to enforce California laws on the site—even if the site is located outside of the United States 🇺🇸. It is a crazy law.

@darnell It is not only an absurd law, it is also an oppressive law. It limits people's freedom to comment and criticize governments for terms of repression (just like in China).

@darnell @Mastodon From the bill, "Additionally, as this bill covers only social media
platforms that deploy addictive features such as algorithmic feeds, push
notifications, autoplay, infinite scroll, and like counts, any platform
not wishing to display a warning label could simply limit their use of
these features." https://www.nysenate.gov/legislation/bills/2025/S4505
