On this day in 1955, the civil rights activist Rosa Parks rejected a bus driver's order to vacate a seat for a white female passenger after the "white" section of the bus was filled.

Parks helped inspire the Black community to boycott the city buses, resulting in a landmark Supreme Court ruling that segregation on public transportation was unconstitutional, a *whole year later*.

Sadly, I wouldn't be surprised to see the Whitehouse try to reverse the desegregation progress of that time.

But Parks wasn't the first person who resisted bus segregation. That would be Claudette Colvin, another important civil rights pioneer we should all know about.
