I was encouraged in to a change of scenery today. We'll see what it does for my brain.

My dad is borrowing my car because his is in the shop.

My backup vehicle is down for repairs.

Our cafe is closed today.

My wife is likely to be working from 8:30 - 8:30 (it's the holiday season, and things tend towards chaos, but there's money to be made in flexibility, so she indulges the chaos.)

So, in order to not be stranded for 12+ hours in a town that is basically non-operational (and also full of tourists who are angry that it is non-operational) because of the holidays, I decided to ride in with my wife and spend the day in someone else's cafe.

It's been half a decade since I spent any regular amount of time trying to get "work" done in someone else's cafe, and more than a decade since I tried to do it in this particular community.

My road warrior chops are rusty.

("Repairs" is a strong word. I loaded up my truck with a bunch of trash to take to the dump, and then a tree fell on our house, and I didn't take the truck to the dump and it sat in one place too long, and now the battery terminals are corroded and the battery might be dead.

So I need to clean the terminals and possibly replace the battery.

But then I also need to 1) clean the interior, because it has started growing things from sitting in the rain for several months, 2) actually take all the debris in the back to the dump.

And, while this is all probably not especially time consuming, it requires me to be at home, with access to another vehicle and multiple hours.

And because of my lifestyle, that rarely happens.)

@ajroach42 I think the most on-brand thing to do is to take the opportunity on Thanksgiving to work with @djsundog to repair the vehicle and get rid of the garbage (at the town dump, presumably).

@aschmitz @djsundog the dump locks the gates and ours up a big sign that says closed on thanksgiving.

@ajroach42 This is probably not helpful at all, but this sounds vaguely like the beginning of Alice's Restaurant. Happy Thanksgiving!

@sundogplanets I mean, I do live near a cliff that is frequently used for dumping...

I'll take the old song as a warning.

The first thing I forgot about working from other people's cafes instead of my own is that they always have the temp too high.

It's burning up in here.

I used to get around this with iced beverages.

But I prefer a hot coffee, especially in the mornings, so I ordered a hot coffee.

Now I'm too hot, and wishing I had ordered an iced coffee. I just don't do this often enough to be good at it anymore.

I switched to an iced drink and discovered that this is the kind of cafe that doesn't do straws.

I understand why this has become a crusade, but sippy lids are worse for our teeth, uncomfortable to use, and take more and more complicated plastic than flat lids. Straws are not the enemy.
