What I really do not want to see in this thread is sighted people telling #Blind people that their choices are wrong if they use #LLMs to get image descriptions that weren’t provided by sighted people who post the images. My followers know I hate LLMs for all the familiar reasons, but just as I don’t attack people who have no other options for using Amazon, I’m not going to criticize Blind folks for doing what they need to when the fault lies with inaccessible sight-centric society.

Also, this is not the place for sighted people to tell their sob stories about how they struggle to write #AltText. The #Alt4Me hashtag is right there. It seems to me that to a #Blind user, the reasons why your image isn’t described, or why it’s incorrectly described by an #LLM, doesn’t change the fact that your image is impenetrable to them. (For what it’s worth, I have ADHD and still I manage to add reasonably meaningful AltText to all my images and videos.)

Oh, crikey, the ultimate Reply Guy (who is of course sighted) has entered the building and posted a stunning 13,000 character/2300 word Reply. I have encountered this guy before, and that time, too, it was about AltText. This is a man who never tires of the sound of his own voice. Well, I've blocked him. I highly recommend this response to Captain Reply Guy.

It’s a very Mastodon thing to post a question or poll explicitly saying, “This is a question for [some marginalized group], please don’t respond if you’re not a member of this group,” and then have dozens of people who aren’t members of that group show up in the replies saying, “I’m not a member of this group, but here’s my opinion.” Reply Guys do not respect boundaries.
