#mastotips

How do we make the conversation here on Mastodon even better?

I would like to suggest one helpful rule: "Read before you reply".

You see, sometimes I get 30+ almost identical replies from good people who unfortunately forget to read a thread before replying to it.

Don't feel bad if you have done it, because we all have, so that is why I am suggesting we all memories this: "Read before you reply".

Here is a small sample of some of the replies to me suggesting a Ukraine peace plan:

@randahl

I am going to have to disagree for a couple of reasons:

1) A lot of us mostly use our phones, which really really suck at long threads.

2) Mastodon has issues with showing all the replies from outside instances.

3) If you don't want identical replies, do a poll instead.

@randahl I thought repetitive replies suggest mass/weight to opinion. If only 1 person replies and 1000 do not, because 1 already wrote what they think, no one ever would need to start a poll.

@Ilka4You in that case, I suggest hitting like on the existing reply you agree with. This documents consensus equally well.

@randahl I understand your point and the logic of it. At the same time this is not how social media works, you put your name (and picture) to a statement, be quoted and boosted for it, get more range for it - if you "just" hit like, you literally are just a number.

@Ilka4You I think you are right, that this is part of the motivation.

@randahl @Ilka4You Maybe its the app I'm using but I can't see how often a reply (or message for all that matters) is liked 🤔

@randahl I'd like to tell my customers this too.
