You’re right. There’s already several “starting pages” (though none ever felt exactly right to me)
Still, in an effort to avoid https://xkcd.com/927/ I haven’t added to the list just yet.
My ideal would be a pretty page with a simple value proposition, then one or two “get off my lawn” drop downs (who are you and what do you want?) that forwards you to the sign up page of a single recommended site (like Google’s “I’m feeling lucky”)

What if your landing page asked a simple question... "How do you want to learn?"
Audio? Send them a podcast.
Video? Link them to @_elena@mastodon.social's video
Tiktok style? Let's make some short punchy intro vids.
Image? Send them to an infographic. Maybe this is where your site lies @benpate@mastodon.social
Memes? Let's show them the best memes we can make.

@benpate I don't think it would hurt to make another starting page, for the very reason that they all choose a different approach that may work for one audience, but not another.
If you know your crowd, make something just for them!
